Welcome to the Diablo Sea Bears Dive Club Web site. Our goal is to provide you with useful information about our Club in the hope that we might interest you in joining us. Our Club is centered at the north end of the San Francisco Bay Area.
DFW is looking for input for upcoming Abalone Regulations... Speak up now or forever regret your silence.
The beginnings of the Diablo Sea Bears Dive Club date back to the early 1970s. At that time a bunch of friends and families tried informally on many occasions to pick dates to get together for dive weekends on the North Coast of California. It was an exercise in frustration to pick dates suitable for everyone to make the trip. It was decided that the best solution was to plan some dives for the majority and formalize it on a scheduled calendar. It was also realized that there were many drawbacks and rules were needed for all to abide by. The founders organized a meeting and selected a body of officers. Then a full calendar of dives on the coast was planned.
Many of the dives that occurred in those first few years took place all along the North Coast. Many different campgrounds were tried. Back then, most of the divers and their families came in and set up tents. Now, nearly all the weekends are spent at the Albion River Campground and most participants have invested in comfortable trailers or camping vehicles. Several members own boats, inflatables and kayaks. Diving, spearfishing, pole fishing and good companionship is a pure joy at the campgrounds. A great fire at the communal fire pit after a hearty potluck dinner can’t be beat, while in the evening watching a beautiful sunset is a euphoric experience.
Being a Sea Bear, sharing time with great friends during our campouts, is a wonderful way to enjoy life. Why not join us? We have room. See you on the coast!
Diving for Abalone only requires a fishing license and an Ab punch card & tags and we’ll happily share our knowledge about it with you. The law requires taking abalone be done while free diving (no external air source).
Most of us also scuba dive. You must be certified by an accredited agency in order to scuba dive though, and that requires professional training.
At this site, you will discover many facts about our club, as well as meet our friendly and outgoing club members.
